Chapter Spotlight – Delta Nu (University of Maine)
This month’s chapter Spotlight is Delta Nu (University of Maine) who was able to bring their campus community together again to raise funds and awareness toward women’s heart health! Vice President of Marketing Laura Quintal shares some changes they made to the event this year to make it a huge success.
Event Name: Move Your Phi’t 5K Run/Walk
Location: Orono, ME
How many times have you held this event? 12
Tell us about the event.
It’s our annual run/walk event. A lot of our participants like to walk the course with their families, but we also have prizes for the first male and female runners, which is a small incentive for students to come down and participate as well!
What changes did you make to this year’s event?
We added more publicity and additional activities to do on the day of the event. For example, we added a raffle for people who may not want to run, but want to come out and support anyway. We had a competition for our members to get participants signed up, and the woman who signed up the most participants got a gift card. Sisters seeing their friends run really inspired them to participate more.
How did these changes impact this year’s event?
This year was much more successful because we tried to make it fun for our members. We had more sisters participate than ever before, which really showed everyone how much we love this event. We also didn’t require as many people on the set up and take down committee because it was so efficient.
What do you think worked well for your event that other chapters would benefit from?
Make sure you get the date out there early and let everyone know about the event! Also, the resources on the Alpha Phi Foundation website were really helpful in regards to planning this event! As for fundraising, we had a registration fee for the event, but it was only $5 before the event and $8 on the day of the race as an incentive to register early. We also had a GoFundMe page that people were able to donate to if they were unable to attend. Many alumnae live far away and this virtual platform allows them to be able to see our progress online!
What did you enjoy most about this event?
For this being our 13th Move Your Phi’t, it’s crazy to see how much it has grown! We all love it so much because it’s one of our biggest events. Unlike our Red Dress Gala where the participants are mostly families and sisters, Move Your Phi’t brings the whole campus community together. It’s amazing to see how many people support Alpha Phi Foundation and women’s heart health.
