From the Heart: Diana Hartley

by Alpha Phi Foundation in Impact

Diana Hartley (Phi-Oklahoma) has something in common with many Alpha Phis—she received a scholarship that allowed her to finish her education.

“The company where my dad had worked for years claimed bankruptcy and my parents couldn’t help me pay for my final year of college. I reached out to the Foundation and wrote them a letter—I remember typing it out—asking for financial support. I received a $1,500 scholarship check from the Foundation. It was a game changer for me.”

As a collegiate member, Diana served as Phi chapter president and she found a mentor in her chapter advisor. She then went into journalism, discovered she had a knack for nurturing community engagement, and found her way into the non-profit sector. After a successful set of careers, her alma mater invited her to become their first Professor of Practice in their Nonprofit Management Program.

An investment that gives back to future generations

Today, Diana combines passion and experience to help students run organizations that change the world, one community at a time. She points to the investment Alpha Phi made in her as the start of it all.

“Having that opportunity to get women engaged and inspired and to create a culture of being proud and stepping up to lead was huge. Identifying women who had skills different than my own and encouraging them to step up—creating that team that could launch the sorority forward. I use those skills even today with teams and working with students on campus.”

With just a $1,500 scholarship, Alpha Phi can invest in the vital education of a woman who can change the world for those around them. Diana knows just how important these kinds of investments are in the future.

“Where women have not had the opportunity to advance to leadership positions in government and business, we are seeing that within the philanthropic sector—women are the leading the field. I wouldn’t be in my role at OU if it weren’t for the work of women in philanthropy.”

Leadership, women’s philanthropy, and sisterhood are all a part of the investment Diana pays forward. You can invest in women who can change the world with a gift to Alpha Phi Foundation this year.
