Volunteer Appreciation Week 2023!

by Courtney Chaffin in Impact

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! We are so grateful for our amazing Foundation volunteers who provide their valuable time and commitment to advancing lives of women everywhere. This week, we are shining the spotlight on some of our dedicated Foundation volunteers and learning why they choose to give back to Alpha Phi!

Amy Nobriga (Eta Delta – CSU East Bay)

Alpha Phi Foundation Scholarship Reader

“The effort the Foundation puts in to support women is what inspires me most. We have a history of heart issues in my family, and the initial goal of raising funds and awareness for Women’s Heart Health was one of the main reasons I accepted my bid to join Alpha Phi. Now that I’m an Alumnae, I do what I can to give back and join in on that effort… and the Foundation has come A LONG WAY in the last 20 years. The opportunities our collegians have now thanks to the programs and scholarships financed by the Foundation are top notch. And I LOVE being a Scholarship Reader – I get to hear about all the great things our collegians are doing to impact their campus, and it is so much fun to hear what their future goals are. It’s a small time investment that has a huge return. I’m definitely looking forward to new opportunities to volunteer with the Foundation in the future!”

Susan Gregory (Gamma Rho – Penn State)

Alpha Phi Foundation Scholarship Reader

“I’m inspired to volunteer for Alpha Phi Foundation because my Alpha Phi experience has been positive and rewarding. My best friends are still the women I met when I pledged Gamma Rho at Penn State. Over the decades, we’ve celebrated together and rallied around one another. Our circle of friendship is truly a sisterhood. Reading applications for scholarships has introduced me to young women from all over the country who love Alpha Phi as much as I do and are making the most of their collegiate experience. I’m impressed by their commitment not only to Alpha Phi, but their campuses and communities. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and ambition come through in their applications, as does their fondness for their sorority.”

Sherri Sanders (Delta Tau- LSU/Omicron – Missouri)

Awards Advisory Group Member & Scholarship Reader

“Alpha Phi sisters like Nancy DeVoe, Val Lawlor, and Barb Melchert inspire me to be an Alpha Phi Foundation volunteer. Years ago, they saw potential in me as a young, naive collegiate and believed in me. Their unwavering friendship, along with the lessons they taught me, guide me everyday. Serving our beloved fraternity and its foundation is one small way I can honor them for positively influencing my journey. The Alpha Phis I meet greatly contribute to my joy as a Foundation Awards Advisory Group member and a scholarship reader. I love the Advisory Group’s spirited conversations that impact how our members experience the application process and set them up for success as future Alpha Phi Scholars. As a reader, I am reminded of a student who once shared that nature awes her and people inspire her. Our future as Alpha Phis is in good hands with the incredibly inspiring Foundation Scholars who unselfishly contribute to their chapters, institutions, and community.”

Megan Boals (Eta Delta – CSU East Bay)

Alpha Phi Foundation Scholarship Reader

“As a member of Alpha Phi, I have gained a great appreciation for mentorship, leadership, scholarship and heart health. Being able to give back to both the members of today and the fraternity gives me a great sense of community. Volunteering as a Medical Reader allows me to give back and also allows me to have a say in who we support each year with our grants. Having a Public Health background allows me to make an informed decision on how we support women’s heart health. Volunteering as a scholarship reader also allows me to give back to the fraternity by helping the members currently enrolled at the many Universities throughout the country.”

Jen (Steiner) Verkamp (Beta Omega – Kent State)

Heart to Heart Advisory Council Member

“Giving back means so much as AΦ challenged me to grow as a leader, increased my self confidence, gave me the gift of the lifelong bond of AΦ sisterhood and was the place I called home during college. Serving on the AΦ Foundation Heart to Heart Advisory Council has been very rewarding. Reviewing innovative grant applications, hearing from passionate researchers, and recommending a deserving grant recipient to the Foundation Board of Directors has been a fascinating process. The experience has been magnified by meeting and collaborating with AΦ sisters on the council who are experts in cardiology, public health, healthcare informatics, research and administration. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be a part of an organization that supports sisters through leadership training, scholarship and aid in times of need as well as championing women’s heart health. I believe in my fraternity – I believe in AΦ!”

Angie Maurer (Epsilon Gamma – Sacramento State)

Heart to Heart Advisory Council Member

“What inspires me to volunteer for Alpha Phi Foundation is having the opportunity to give back to our sisterhood by supporting our collegiates in their career goals while at the same time supporting our communities through our philanthropic work. As a previous cardiac critical care nurse with a family history of heart disease, our philanthropy work in women’s heart health has always meant a lot to me. Being in the clinical research industry for over 21 years, I have helped companies conduct clinical trials to test new treatments and help design the best clinical trials they can. The most rewarding part of being a member of the Heart to Heart Advisory Council is being able to apply my experience and knowledge to help advance research in women’s heart health.”

Thank you, sisters, for sharing your time and talents to advance women’s lives through the power of philanthropy! We truly appreciate each and every one of you!
